About Brian

A career of securing innovation with patents

Given design inputs, Brian excels at conceiving and developing novel product designs that fully consider the intellectual property landscape and competitor product portfolios. Brian is also proficient at drafting and prosecuting patents, technology assessment, searching and evaluating the prior art, managing corporate US and OUS patent and trademark portfolios, directing and evaluating work product by outside IP counsel and internal IP staff, and successfully executing the related budgets.

As corporate director of intellectual property, design engineer including CAD, and registered patent agent, Brian contributed to the rapid growth of Pioneer Surgical Technology. He directed IP legal teams and contributed to strategies that successfully defended the company against assaults from competitors and to stop misuse of company IP. Brian’s design contributions also accelerated growth of Balanced Body, a leading manufacturer of Pilates exercise machines. Earlier work as a licensed physical therapist and healthcare leader helped establish the Sparrow Health Pavilion, a well-known integrated medical, research and fitness complex.

Education

Brian passed the patent bar exam in 2002. He has since been registered to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office and has completed extensive coursework with the Patent Resources Group, Patent Law Institute, and numerous other patent workshops and seminars.

Previously, Brian completed a Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Tech University. As a graduate student he secured funding from Total Gym (recall the Chuck Norris & Christy Brinkley infomercials) to design adjunct equipment to the clinical Total Gym. Brian also worked as a graduate teaching assistant where he assisted students with design projects utilizing a high end 3D modeling & finite element analysis program called SDRC Ideas.

Brian practiced as a physical therapist for nearly a decade after graduating from the University of Michigan/Flint physical therapy program in 1987. During this time he completed coursework in product design at Michigan State University.

Family

Brian has been married to his wife Laura for 18 years with whom he has four beautiful children. His oldest child is a sophmore in high school and youngest just started preschool. The family enjoys being active members of St. Peter's Cathedral.

Brian enjoys the outdoors and looks forward to summer days on the local lakes, biking the local trails, or camping with the family at local parks with their pop-up camper.

In the winter, Brian enjoys backwoods snowshoeing and early morning basketball with friends.
